Engineered Stone Surface FAQs

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between porcelain and manufactured stone?

Porcelain is a ceramic surface produced from refined natural materials and fired at extremely high temperatures. Manufactured stone is an engineered surface created using mineral-based formulations and advanced binding technologies. Both offer excellent durability but differ in appearance, fabrication requirements and performance characteristics.

Does manufactured stone contain silica?

All manufactured stone products supplied by AMU Stone comply with current Australian regulations and are crystalline silica-free.

What is crystalline silica-free engineered stone?

Crystalline silica-free engineered stone is a manufactured surface containing less than 1% crystalline silica. It has been developed to comply with Australia’s updated industry standards while maintaining the durability and appearance engineered stone is known for.

Does engineered stone need sealing?

No. Unlike many natural stones, engineered stone does not require ongoing sealing and is easy to maintain with everyday cleaning.

Can engineered stone be used as a splashback?

Yes. Engineered stone can be used as a splashback. Behind gas cooktops, the required appliance clearances must be maintained, while behind induction and electric cooktops it can typically be installed as a full-height splashback.

Can engineered stone be used outdoors?

Engineered stone is generally recommended for internal applications or fully covered outdoor areas where protected from direct UV exposure.

Is engineered stone heat, scratch and stain resistant?

Engineered stone is designed to resist heat, scratches and staining, making it an excellent choice for busy homes and commercial spaces. While highly durable, no surface is completely heat, scratch or stain proof. Using trivets for hot cookware, cutting boards for food preparation and wiping spills promptly will help keep your surface looking its best for years to come.

What's the difference between engineered stone and natural stone?

Natural stone is formed by nature, meaning every slab is unique. Engineered stone offers greater consistency in colour and pattern, making it ideal for projects where a uniform appearance is preferred.
