Natural Stone Surface care overview

Protecting Natural Beauty For Years To Come

Natural stone is one of the most durable and beautiful materials you can bring into your home. Because it is a natural product, every slab is unique and requires a little ongoing care to keep it looking its best. With the right maintenance, your stone surface will continue to perform beautifully for many years.

Everyday Cleaning

For everyday cleaning, simply wipe your surface with a soft cloth or microfibre cloth and warm water. If required, use a pH-neutral stone cleaner specifically designed for natural stone.

Clean spills as soon as possible, particularly acidic substances such as wine, citrus, vinegar and coffee, to minimise the risk of staining or etching.

Avoid abrasive scourers, harsh chemicals, bleach and cleaning products containing acids, as these can damage the stone’s surface and finish.

Sealing Your Stone

Most natural stones benefit from periodic sealing to help protect against staining and maintain their appearance.

As a general guide:

  • Granite, Quartzite & Dolomite: Reseal approximately every 12 months.
  • Marble & Limestone: May require more frequent sealing depending on the stone type and level of use.

AMU Stone stocks professional-grade sealers suitable for a range of natural stone surfaces. If you’re unsure which product is right for your stone or when it should be resealed, speak with our team. We’ll recommend the most suitable sealer and provide guidance on how and when to apply it.

Stone Flooring & Wall Clading

Natural stone flooring and wall cladding should be dusted or vacuumed regularly to remove dirt and grit, which can act as an abrasive over time.

For deeper cleaning, use warm water and a pH-neutral stone cleaner. Avoid acidic or abrasive products that may dull the surface or damage the finish.

Protecting Your Surface

A few simple habits will help keep your natural stone looking its best:

  • Use coasters under glasses, particularly with wine, citrus drinks and alcohol.
  • Always place hot pots, pans and baking trays on a trivet or heat mat.
  • Use a chopping board rather than cutting directly on the stone.
  • Avoid dragging heavy cookware or appliances across the surface.
  • Wipe spills promptly to minimise the risk of staining or etching.

With the right care, your natural stone will continue to age beautifully, retaining the character and individuality that makes every slab unique.
